Comments This video explores the problems faced by distributors in the film industry. This interview provides a valuable source of information, with primary accounts from some of the leading film distributors and exhibitors in the business. It is of relevance to those exploring the distribution and exhibition side to films, offering a discussion of the recent problems and plans for the future.

In the interview Miller addresses these problems with reference also to the role of exhibitors. She draws a link between the two roles, acknowledging that they are closely intertwined and that if someone is a good distributor then they are half exhibiting the film. Problems faced by independent and Australian films are discussed, in terms of fighting for a place within the industry and getting noticed. However the number of independent films has been identified as having increased over the years, suggesting that there is even greater demand to get films onto screens. Miller shares her thoughts in regard to the difficulty faced by mediocre films getting noticed, due to the large volume of international films they are competing with. She does however support the belief that if a film is great, or even good for that matter, they will get onto screens.

Internet piracy is discussed in terms of the problems it creates for filmmakers and consequently cinemas, as it offers another means of access to films. The interview provides great insight into how Cinemas are responding to the issue, with Miller using Cinema Nova as an example. According to Miller the focus is on making the cinema experience exciting, offering incentives like comfortable seats and quality service to help achieve this. Furthermore Miller talks about including ‘special events’, like in-cinema appearances from the actors. Miller shares her confidence in the future of theatrical exhibition, with technological development, like HD and 3D, providing cinemas with the ability to reinvent themselves as a way of attracting customers.
