Synopsis This article discusses the Astor’s 75th anniversary, with a brief history of the cinema. The article draws reference to Marzipan, a cat that has lived in the Astor theatre for 19 years, and to this day can be found wondering the cinema, jumping on patrons laps while they watch films. It draws attention to the Astor being the “sole remaining single-screen picture palace operating in Melbourne”, and it’s history as a Greek language film cinema before current manager George Florence took over in 1982. The article draws attention to the Astor’s large collection of 35-millimetre film prints, which are leant out worldwide by Mr. Florence’s company Chapel Distribution. It further goes into the non-profit trust set up to protect and preserve the Astor building; ‘Friends of the Astor’. The article concludes with the sale of the Astor to St. Michaels Grammar School in 2007 for $3.8million, and the bright future this has offered the cinema.
