Title Titans of Trash
Author(s)Adrian Martin
Publication Date 01-03-1995
Page Number 88-89
Comments Adrian Martin’s article contributes to the long-standing criticism of the Australian Film Industry’s believed cultural bias against less ‘wholesome’ forms of cinema. While the article only expresses the tip of the iceberg for this issue (which ten years later, still rages on), it provides a basic grounding with which to approach the topic, even if it is fairly one sided.
Synopsis This article points to the pretentious nature of Australian film culture through its absent praise for successful Australian directors of the action, horror or thriller genres. The advocates of these cinemas of ‘trash’, Martin suggests, are disadvantaged by the savage system of cultural taste within the Australian film industry, which saves its approval for only ‘serious’, highbrow productions.

Martin also comments on Body Melt’s snub at a mere nomination for best direction or best film at the AFI Awards, a film he defends as far more accomplished and original than many others who have acquired these trophies in the past.
