Title Kennedy Miller, Cross-Over and Collaboration
Author(s)Debi Enker
Page Number 14 - 22
Comments This article was first published in 'Back of Beyond: Discovering Australian Film and Television', Australian Film Commission, 1988. It is a revised and updated version of the above article which was originally commissioned for a programme of film and television held at the University of California, Los Angeles, in October-Novemember 1988. It is also avaiable through the Australian Film Commission (AFC).
The article aims to examine the production and personal histories of one of Australia's premier production companies, Kennedy Miller. The author attempts to examine Kennedy Miller, by departing from the common method of analysis which details the company's many successes. The author does outline the history of Kennedy Miller's success, yet this is of course essential to a comprehensive understanding of the relationship of Kennedy Miller to the Australian film and television climate. The way in which this article does stray from the common course, is through the author's analysis of the company's own rite-of-passage. The author, (consciously or not) applies the 'hero's journey' formula to Kennedy Miller itself, taking the reader on a passage through time. The way in which the 'hero's journey' is questioned saves this article. The author questions the role of women in Kennedy Miller productions and comprehensively discusses the relationship maintained between production company and director or writer. Kennedy Miller prides itself on its 'collaborative' approach to film and television, yet the author manages to draw a clean distinction between both and what this means in terms of production values. Worth a read for those who have an interest in Australia's production history.
It is of interest to note that this issue of Cinema Papers contains articles on Terry Hayes and John Duigan.
