Title Outcasts Discover Love in 'Flirting'
Author(s)Mick LaSalle
Publication Date 20-11-1992
Page Number C12
Comments This is a very intersting review because it states that 'Flirting' is a much more serious film that its title and marketing suggest. LaSalle finds it amusing that the audience is almost being tricked into thinking they are going to view a "schlock" film, but in fact actually viewing a much better film that they have been previously led to believe. This is an interesting strategy of course, because it is usually the opposite.
One thing which I find impressive about this reading of the film, is the acknowledgement of thematic preoccupations which stretch far beyond that of 'young love'. 'Flirting' to me is about conformity and control, about tyrannical behaviour in the almost mythical world of the film. This mythical space that the film occupies can be translated and applied to the reality of everyday existence. The two sites of meaning are in direct relation to one another and this is a way in which the film evokes emotion.
The author acknowledges weaknesses in the film (in particular with reference to the supporting characters) which indicates he has really thought about the film rather than reworking the press kit!
Synopsis Brief review and synopsis of 'Flirting' which includes a still photograph of Thandie Newton and Noah Taylor in 'Flirting'.
