Comments This particular chapter discusses a period in Australia's cinematic development. The authors analyse the ingredients which have contributed to the cinematic climate in Australia with particular attention given to aesthetic and narrative constructions predominant in films made during the 1980's. A number of factors are examined in terms of their impact on "type" and "genre" in the Australian cinema. These are; government policy, financing and marketing mechanisms.
This chapter examines two emergent genres defined by the authors as: the "AFC-Genre" and the "Social Realist" film.
This is a fantastic chapter because the authors throughly explain their reasons for assuming "convention" inherent in this period of Australia's cinematic history. Their analysis of these conventions is founded upon examination of narrative, mise-en-scene, montage, thematic shemata and other cinematic conventions which aid in the construction of meaning. If the reader has recognised distinctive trends in Australian film in the 1980's and lacks a grounding in their analysis, this book will be of much help due to its grouping of commonalities previously too broad in their scope to assume clarity.
Synopsis This book is a thorough analysis of the Australian film industry during the 1980's. It details conditions such as finance, marketing and government policy which have contributed to the climate of the Australian film industry. The book contains stills of films made during the 1980's which contribute to the authors' analysis.
